What does Key-Scout find out?

Key

Your song’s key, root note plus major or minor, and the relative key. You need it to write melodies or a hook, set up Auto-Tune correctly or pick matching samples.

BPM

The tempo in beats per minute. Useful when you record on a beat, mix songs in a DJ set or time delays to the song. Half and double tempo are often close, for example 70 and 140 BPM in trap.

Time signature

Whether the song is in 4/4, 3/4 or 6/8. Most rap and pop songs are in 4/4, ballads and waltzes often in 3/4 or 6/8.

Privacy

The analysis runs entirely in your browser. Your song is never uploaded or stored, so you can check unreleased tracks too.

Common questions

How accurate is the key detection?

For most songs with clear harmony Key-Scout gets the key right. Songs with little harmony, like only drums and 808, or songs that change key are harder. Then it shows the most likely key with a lower confidence. The relative key is often the second correct answer.

Why does it show 70 instead of 140 BPM?

Half and double tempo often feel the same. Trap beats are often felt at half tempo. If your DAW says 140 BPM and Key-Scout says 70, both are right.

Which files can I upload?

WAV, AIFF, FLAC and MP3. The file stays on your device.

Is Key-Scout free?

Yes, no sign-up and no limits.
